By: Danielle Tolman, PT, DPT

Welcome to our latest exploration into managing vestibular migraine through lifestyle modifications. For those navigating the challenges of vestibular migraine, finding balance in daily life can often feel like an uphill battle. However, amidst the dizzying array of symptoms, there are strategies that empower individuals to regain control and enhance their quality of life.

Come with us as we delve into the intricate relationship between lifestyle choices and vestibular migraine, uncovering actionable tips and insights to help mitigate symptoms and foster greater well-being. From dietary adjustments to stress management techniques, we'll be by your side as you navigate a holistic approach aimed at addressing the multifaceted nature migraine.

  1. Reducing possible food triggers: Temporarily reduce or eliminate any foods that may make you symptomatic. We love all of the Migraine Diet resources provided by Alicia over at The Dizzy Cook. Check her blog out here for more information!

  2. Try to find ways to help reduce stress. This includes trying mediation sessions for "body mapping" or "body scanning". One of my favorite apps is Insight Timer. Here is a great Body Mapping session to try out: Body Scan Relaxation.

  3. If light sensitivity continues to be a trigger, there are specific types of light filtering lenses that help reduce the type of light that irritates migraine activity. Here are a few examples:

  • There are many migraine filtering glasses options out there. TheraSpecs is an affordable and highly effective brand for these specialty lenses that are designed to specifically filter out a unique spectrum of light identified by evidence based research that can impact migrainous activity.

  • Alicia Wolf wrote a great article comparing all of the brands. Check it out here: Which Migraine Glasses are the Best?

  1. Regulate your sleep. We love a gentle alarm clock for improving sleep hygiene. Here's a great choice for you to consider! Also, here is a great video from the Association of Migraine Disorders about the relationship between good sleep health and migraines.

Managing vestibular migraine through lifestyle modifications is not just about addressing symptoms; it's about reclaiming control over your life. By implementing the strategies discussed in this guide, we can empower ourselves to navigate the challenges of vestibular migraine with greater resilience and grace.

Remember, finding the right combination of lifestyle modifications may require patience and experimentation. What works for one person may not work for another, so it's essential to listen to your body and work closely with healthcare professionals, like a physical therapist trained in vestibular dysfunction, to tailor a plan that meets your individual needs.

As we journey forward, let's continue to advocate for greater awareness and support for those living with vestibular migraine. By sharing our experiences, insights, and successes, we can create a more compassionate and informed community dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by migraine.
