November is National Family Caregivers Month — a time to honor the incredible individuals who give their time, energy, and love to support someone else’s health journey. Whether caring for an aging parent, a spouse recovering from a stroke, or a loved one living with a chronic condition, caregivers are the heartbeat behind daily progress and recovery.

At Coastal Plain Therapy & Wellness, we see firsthand how much caregivers do. You manage appointments, track medications, provide emotional encouragement, and adapt your home to keep your loved one safe, all while juggling your own responsibilities. This month, we want to celebrate you, support you, and remind you that therapy isn’t just for the patient...it’s for you too.
Physical Therapy: Helping You Move Together
When a loved one experiences changes in mobility or strength, physical therapists (PTs) often work closely with caregivers to ensure safety at home. We teach proper techniques for transfers, lifting, and assisting with walking so you can protect your own body while helping your loved one move safely. We can also recommend simple home modifications (like grab bars or equipment) to make caregiving less physically demanding and reduce fall risk for both of you.
Tip: Ask your PT to show you “caregiver body mechanics.” Small changes in how you help your loved one stand, turn, or walk can prevent back pain and injuries for you.
Occupational Therapy: Supporting Daily Routines and Independence
Occupational therapists (OTs) focus on helping your loved one maintain as much independence as possible, and that helps caregivers too. OTs provide tools and strategies for dressing, bathing, cooking, and other daily routines. They can also help you establish structured routines that balance your loved one’s needs with your own rest and self-care time.
Tip: Ask your OT about adaptive equipment that reduces your workload — like built-up handles for utensils, reachers, or shower chairs. Small tools can make a big difference.
Speech-Language Pathology: Building Communication and Connection
When communication or swallowing become difficult, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) empower caregivers to play a vital role in therapy. From learning how to cue speech more effectively to preparing meals with safer textures, caregivers often become the bridge between therapy sessions and everyday success at home.
Tip: If your loved one has communication challenges, ask your SLP to teach you supported conversation techniques — such as yes/no questions, visual cues, or communication boards — to keep your interactions meaningful and reduce frustration for both of you.
Remember: Caregivers Need Care, Too
You are an essential part of your loved one’s recovery team, but you’re also your own person. Burnout and fatigue can sneak up quickly when you give so much of yourself to others. Take time for your health, movement, and mental wellness. Therapy services can support you, too — whether through body strengthening, stress management strategies, or ergonomic education.
This National Family Caregivers Month, we honor your dedication, love, and resilience. Your care changes lives, and we’re here to make sure you have the support you need along the way.
